Happy International Women’s Day, everyone! This is a day to celebrate the contribution that women make to our community. Women like Bertha, an Opportunity Fund client, who runs Twister Gymnastic, a gymnastics school for boys and girls in Los Angeles.
Originally from Mexico, Bertha opened the gym when she saw the need for children to have both a positive outlet after school, as well as a way to get much needed exercise.
“It was a shock to see how much this community is struggling. These are people from my country, and many are having a hard time. I want to help people in need. This isn’t a big business, but it gives me a lot of satisfaction,” said Bertha.
Nearly 10 years ago Bertha started her gymnasium on a shoestring budget with the help of community support. But without any financing options, she had to use a merchant cash advance as well as loans from family members to keep her business going, until she found Opportunity Fund.
“Without the loan from Opportunity Fund I would never have been able to buy the new equipment to keep my gym fun and safe. I would have been in real trouble.”
Our hats off to Bertha, who is transforming her community by building a successful business that gives children with few resources the ability to participate in a fun and meaningful sport after school.
