Financing for Mobile Food Trucks

Posted on Oct 04, 2013 by

KojiWhen Koji wanted to start a business selling traditional Japanese street snacks, he could not find financing to purchase a food cart.  Opportunity Fund saw Koji's potential, and provided a $10,000 loan to help him launch Onigilly serving "samurai sushi" around San Francisco.

Since then, Koji has expanded his mobile food business to include two brick and mortar locations (with another Opportunity Fund loan) and employs almost 20 people.  Recently, Onigilly won the SF Small Business of the Year Award.  Building on Koji's success, Opportunity Fund seeks to significantly expand our microlending to mobile food businesses as a targeted strategy to help these entrepreneurs generate stable income, create jobs, and support vibrant communities.

The mobile food industry offers low-income—and, particularly, minority and women—entrepreneurs a way to support their families and build financial independence.  Yet many of these small business owners cannot secure the financing they need to purchase food carts or trucks, or to pay for upgrades and replacement equipment. There are thousands of underserved existing, and aspiring, mobile food entrepreneurs in California.

Opportunity Fund seeks to fill this gap by offering mobile food vendors access to affordable, appropriate capital through our Mobile Food Truck Financing Initiative. Through this initiative, we will target the high concentration of low-income mobile food vendors with microloans of $2,500 to $100,000 for equipment purchases and upgrades at fixed, affordable interest rates. Our goal is to originate $2 million in loans to underserved mobile food entrepreneurs in California each year to secure our position as California’s leader in mobile food truck financing.

    I WANT A FOOD TRUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not going into debt over the years was suppose to be a smart thing to do. Not quite. Every loan/grant I apply for turns me down for no credit history. Dont want ANY type of handout. Would pay back any start-up loan with higher interest than the going rate.

I have been looking for an opportunity to start selling my BBQ and sauce for several years now. I was giving a $2000.00 smoker by chance. I started making plans to get started and found a food truck with commercial smoker built in and fully equipped and operational. It is 5 years old. Cost for trailer and start-up would be $40,000.00. Need help.

Greetings: I am interested in purchasing a food truck to sell my pet treats from! That might sound funny, but the pet business is booming. I produce 15 different flavors of dog treats, several different flavors of cat treats. I make a goat milk frozen yogurt. Pupcakes with goat cheese! Gourmet pet treats! I would like a food truck that I could bake in and sell from! I need help financing!

We just started a food truck business but renting a food truck is hard. All our income just go to paying the truck and commissary. If only we can get a loan to buy a food truck its going to be a lot easier. I want to know how to get a loan. Do we need a good credit score to get a loan. If we dont get a loan i don't know if we could survive. Me and my husband am very hard working person. I still work and doing the food truck. Please help us. How can I get more information. Thank you. Jhoanne
