On October 25th, Dreams Realized brought together two hundred of Opportunity Fund’s friends, donors and supporters to celebrate Founder Eric Weaver’s legacy of trailblazing impact, to welcome new CEO Luz Urrutia in leading our bold future, and to honor client Jimmy Orozco, owner of Iguanas Burritozilla, with the Leslie Award for Entrepreneurship.
Dreams Realized was a special evening for the Opportunity Fund community, celebrating our past and future at an exciting point of transition and growth. The evening’s hosts—Susan Ford Dorsey, Mark Leslie, John A. Sobrato, and Emmett Carson of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation—led an inspiring ceremony honoring Eric and his impact at Opportunity Fund over the past 24 years. Welcomed by Eric, Luz presented her vision for Opportunity Fund’s bold future as our new CEO and awarded Jimmy Orozco, Opportunity Fund client and owner of Iguanas Burritozilla, with the Leslie Award for Entrepreneurship.
The evening marked another milestone: we launched The Founder’s Fund, a $1 million fund that celebrates Founder Eric Weaver’s leadership, passion, and singular vision to build resilient and more equitable communities, in order to drive Opportunity Fund’s growth and impact into the future. With the support of our hosts, sponsors, and guests, we raised almost $500,000!
Thank you to those who joined us for this inspiring evening! We greatly appreciate your support for Opportunity Fund and our clients.
Opening with remarks from Emmett Carson of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, hosts Susan Ford Dorsey, Mark Leslie, and John A. Sobrato spoke about their commitment to Opportunity Fund over the years. Each shared their story of how they were introduced to Eric and Opportunity Fund and their excitement for how far Opportunity Fund has come and its promising future.
With a warm introduction from Bud Colligan, Eric shared his journey with Opportunity Fund and his enthusiasm and confidence in handing over the organization’s leadership to Luz: “We aren’t here just to look back…We are also here to look forward and I, for one, foresee a very bright future for Opportunity Fund.” Eric welcomed the driver of this bright future: new CEO Luz Urrutia.
Luz took the stage, speaking about the “big dreams” that drive Opportunity Fund, both in the past and future, and how she will implement our strategic plan to achieve our bold goals: “I come to Opportunity Fund believing deeply that when we dream big, we can affect profound economic and social changes. And by helping others achieve their big dreams, Opportunity Fund becomes stronger and is in a better position to scale and help more people for generations to come.”
Luz presented this year’s Leslie Award for Entrepreneurship to Jimmy Orozco, Opportunity Fund client and owner of Iguanas Burritozilla, a popular burrito restaurant chain in the San Jose area. With six locations and over 80 employees, Jimmy was selected for his dedication to driving economic activity and job creation in his community. “My team puts in a lot of work every day, but this award allowed me to step back and look at the bigger picture of what we’ve accomplished,” said Jimmy. A Great Evening in Support of Great Cause
Following the program, many paddles were raised in support of the Founder’s Fund. We made significant progress towards the $1 million Founder’s Fund, raising nearly $500,000 to make thousands of dreams into realities.
In addition to an inspiring program and successful fundraiser, guests enjoyed delicious food and drinks, a beautiful venue, and a wonderful crowd of supporters. The menu featured “Opportunity Funded” chefs with Curveball serving up a variety of sliders as hors d’oeuvres and Treatbot scooping many flavors of ice cream (plus a little karaoke) for dessert.
