Opportunity Fund Welcome Debra Engel to Board of Directors

Opportunity Fund’s Board of Directors welcomes Debra Engel as its newest member. Having served on Opportunity Fund’s Leadership Council since 2015, Debra has been a committed member of Opportunity Fund’s leadership during important moments of recent growth and change for the organization. After working closely with Opportunity Fund as part of the CEO selection committee last year and getting to know new CEO Luz Urrutia, Debra decided to join the Board of Directors in December 2017, in addition to her role on the Leadership Council.

“We are thrilled to have Debra join the Board of Directors,” said Board Chair Greg Avis. “Having worked closely with her on the Leadership Council and having witnessed her commitment to Opportunity Fund, I know she brings exceptional expertise in human resources and nonprofit leadership to the Board, in addition to a keen understanding for fundraising. Debra’s long career in business and philanthropy will be key assets that will help Opportunity Fund accomplish its bold strategic plan, as the organization grows to help more underserved communities than ever before in California and beyond.”

In addition to her service on Opportunity Fund’s Board, Debra has served on more than 25 for-profit, private, and not-for-profit boards in Silicon Valley over the last 20 years. Debra currently serves on the regional and national boards for Facing History and Ourselves, as a strategic advisor to ITVS (an independent television service), and on the leadership councils for the YWCA and ALearn. Prior not-for-profit board experience includes the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (former chair CFSV), the Skoll Fund, the eBay Foundation, the American Leadership Forum, the Institute for the Future, the Entrepreneur’s Foundation (co-chair), Next Door Solutions for Domestic Violence, the Valley Medical Center Foundation, and The Health Trust.

Prior to her board service, Debra was Senior Vice President for Corporate Services at 3Com. Before joining the founding management team at 3Com, Debra served as Hewlett Packard’s global staffing manager.

Debra holds a master’s degree in Industrial Relations from Iowa State University.

“I have admired Opportunity Fund’s mission and work since I joined the Leadership Council in 2015, and as I’ve spent more time with the organization, Opportunity Fund’s proven track record and impact inspired me to become more engaged and join the Board of Directors,” said Debra.  “Opportunity Fund is doing important work to empower underserved communities, and I am excited to join the Board of Directors and further support Opportunity Fund’s mission.”
