"Opportunity Fund helped me every step of the way"

Opportunity Fund helped Fernanda build up enough savings to attend her dream college, UC Davis.
Finding a Way to Fund Her Dream
Born and raised in Oakland, Fernanda was always driven to go to college. Her parents, who came to the U.S. from Mexico in hope of a better life and future, supported her ambition. Fernanda’s father especially encouraged her to work hard for her goals and knew that a college degree would allow Fernanda to have better career opportunities.
Money was the only thing standing in Fernanda’s way. Fernanda’s father is a landscaper and her mother is a teacher, and they couldn’t afford to send Fernanda to college.
“When I saw tuition was more than my parents earn in a year, my dream to go to UC Davis was nearly crushed,” said Fernanda.
When Fernanda discovered Opportunity Fund’s savings program, she had new hope that going to University of California, Davis was possible.
With the help of her family and a part-time job, Fernanda saved $2,000 over two years. Opportunity Fund and its community of donors matched her savings 2:1 to reach the $6,000 that would help Fernanda cover the cost of tuition.
UC Davis Graduate
“My dad taught me that it doesn’t matter how slowly you go, what matters is that you’re going somewhere. And Opportunity Fund helped me every step of the way," said Fernanda.
Because of her savings, Fernanda achieved her dream of attending UC Davis, and graduated in International Relations and Psychology. She was the first in her family to graduate from college. Now, Fernanda is excited about her future working as a counselor for troubled youth.
