"The fact that this savings program tripled my savings encouraged me to keep saving and gave me the peace of mind that I needed to enjoy my college experience.” -Andrea
Opportunity Fund gave Andrea a second chance at college, something she thought she wouldn't be able to get.
Postponing a dream
“All my life, I’ve worried about money" said Andrea. “My mom is a babysitter and my dad works in construction. There have been hard times, but I made it through knowing that I wanted to do something great.” Andrea is originally from Lima, Peru. With an older brother (23) and younger sister (15), she knew it was going to be difficult to go to college.
Andrea applied to the University of California schools, but unfortunately had to postpone her education because even with financial aid and scholarships her family couldn't afford it. "Later, I decided to attend State school because it was more affordable. But I still had no idea how I would be able to earn four grand a semester to go towards tuition,” said Andrea.

It was around that time when she learned about Opportunity Fund’s savings program through her mentor with the Sobrato Family Foundation. "If I had not participated in the program, it would probably be taking me much longer to graduate from San Jose State University.” Every month, Andrea put $167 into her savings account. After a year, she was able to save $2,000 that Opportunity Fund tripled. The savings Andrea earned allowed her to cover tuition for a full year at SJSU and to ease up on work so she could focus on her studies. "I worked multiple jobs, sometimes up to four in order to pay for my education. The fact that this savings program tripled my savings encouraged me to keep saving and gave me the peace of mind that I needed to enjoy my college experience.”
Andrea is currently a senior and loves every minute of college. She is studying business and hospitality and is on track to graduate in May 2015. "Opportunity Fund gave me the financial boost I desperately needed to conquer my educational goals.”
