Saving for the Future

Shoron microsavings client story

East Palo Alto, CA

Savings Goal: $2,000

Savings Reached: $2,000

As the eldest of eight children, Gilberto always wanted to be a role model for his younger siblings. He worked hard in high school, graduating at the top of his class and earning a spot at UCLA.

Gilberto won a scholarship, but he knew it wasn't enough to make college a reality. Then, Gilberto joined Opportunity Fund's Microsavings Program, which helped him and his family save and earn matching funds to pay for school.

Last May, Gilberto graduated UCLA with a Bachelor's degree and a prestigious public policy fellowship in Washington, D.C.

A bachelor's degree - like the one Gilberto earned at UCLA - increases lifetime earnings and economic mobility, and decreases the likelihood of unemployment.
